IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is the fourth version of the Internet Protocol, using 32-bit addresses written as four decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.0.1). It supports approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses, which have been fully allocated.
IPv4 addresses are 32 bits long, divided into four 8-bit octets. Each octet represents a decimal number from 0 to 255. Network routers use these addresses to forward packets to the correct destination. Because the 4.3 billion address pool is exhausted, IPv4 relies on NAT to allow multiple devices to share a single public address.
Most proxy users only need to understand this well enough to debug it, not configure it directly.
USER-country-de-session-task01The username carries the config: "country-de" picks the exit, "session-task01" holds it in place while IPv4 does its work underneath. No separate API call or handshake -- the label is the setting.
Measure this metric without a proxy first, so you know what the gateway adds versus what was already there.
This concept governs the connection to the gateway and the gateway to the target -- check both when something looks wrong.
KnoxProxy manages this at the infrastructure layer, so most jobs only need to understand it well enough to debug.
A new ISP, VPN, or office network can change how this behaves -- confirm it again after any local network change.
A proxy provider advertises a pool of 2 million IPv4 residential addresses spread across 195 countries for geo-targeted data collection.
The vast majority of websites and proxy services still operate on IPv4. Understanding IPv4 helps you evaluate proxy pool sizes and IP management strategies.
The 4.3 billion IPv4 address space was designed in 1981 when the internet had few users. With billions of connected devices today, all available IPv4 blocks have been allocated to regional registries. NAT and IPv6 adoption are the two solutions.
Most proxy providers primarily offer IPv4 because it has the widest compatibility. Some providers also offer IPv6 proxies, which are cheaper due to the larger address space but are not supported by all websites.
